Bagshot is a large village in the Surrey Heath borough of Surrey, England, [2] approximately 27 miles (43 km) southwest of central London. In the past, Bagshot served as an important staging post between London, Southampton and the West Country , evidenced by the original coaching inns still present in the village today.
This reflects the fact that Bagshot used to be a more important town as a staging post on journeys from London to Southampton and the West Country. [citation needed] Lightwater has grown in size as a dormitory settlement in recent times. In the adjacent 1890s map of the area, Bagshot is a notable town while Lightwater is noted as just a farm.
The estate includes Swinton Park, the seat of the Danby family and (from 1882) of the Cunliffe-Lister family (the Earls of Swinton), an English country house in Swinton near Masham. It is set in 200 acres (81 ha) of parkland, lakes and gardens. The house is a Grade II* listed building, [2] and now operates as the 42-bedroom Swinton Park Hotel.
Before the list itself, a discussion of its scope includes lengthy lists of buildings excluded from the main lists for various reasons. The Castellarium Anglicanum, an authoritative index of castles in England and Wales published in 1983, lists over 1,500 castle sites in England. [2] Many of these castles have vanished or left almost no trace.
The house had six reception rooms, 12 bedrooms, and 12 bathrooms. It was the first newly built royal home since Bagshot Park, which was built in 1879 for the Duke of Connaught. In the British tabloid press, the home was often referred to as 'SouthYork', a play on words for the 'Southfork' estate in the popular 1980s soap opera Dallas.
