The 1972 Chevelle SS top engine was rated at 270 net hp (201 kW), conforming with GM's decree that all engines would be rated at their net engine ratings. All other engines on the SS roster were unchanged from 1971. 1972 was the last year for the cowl induction option for the 454 cid engine and was not even mentioned in the 1972 Chevelle brochure.
All SS models come with distinctive "SS" markings on their exterior. The SS package was first made available for the 1961 Impala . [ 1 ] Some of the other models bearing the SS badge include the Camaro , Chevelle , El Camino , Impala , Monte Carlo , Nova and Chevrolet Pickup Trucks.
The SS was visually distinguished by wide rocker panels and a bright aluminum deck lid cove. The third generation Chevelle was an extensively used body style in NASCAR competition from 1973 to 1977. The Chevelle Laguna S-3 in particular was extremely successful. Its sloped nose, small rear quarter windows and "fastback-style" rear glass gave it an aero advantage over other GM body styles at NASCAR's fastest tracks.
In Canada, Beaumont offered an equivalent model, the Sport Deluxe (SD). For 1966, the SD was combined with the Chevrolet 230 cid six- cylinder, 283 or 327 cid small-block V8, or 396 cid Mark IV big-block V8, along with the same optional bucket seats/console package as the Chevelle SS 396, along with unique trim and emblems.
Exterior sheetmetal is shared with the Chevelle (the rear taillight housings and tailligh lenses were Beaumont-exclusive - While full wheel covers had unique Beaumont emblems, small hubcaps and 1967-69 rally wheels caps were similarly trimmed but not the same as on the 1967 style Chevelle.
