Sligo County Council (Irish: Comhairle Chontae Shligigh) is the local authority of County Sligo, Ireland. As a county council , it is governed by the Local Government Act 2001 . The council is responsible for housing and community, roads and transportation , urban planning and development, amenity and culture , and environment .

[49] [50] It retains the right to be described as a borough. [51] The chair of the borough district uses the title of mayor, rather than Cathaoirleach. [52]
Originally meetings of Sligo County Council were held at Sligo Courthouse. [1] The county council moved to modern facilities at Riverside in June 1979. [2] The building was substantially re-modeled, to a design by Murray O'Laoire, to create a new council chamber and reception area: the new facilities were opened by Noel Dempsey, Minister for the Environment and Local Government, in June 2001.

He was first elected to Sligo Corporation and Sligo County Council in 1974 and has retained his seat on both authorities at each subsequent election (the former was abolished as a separate authority in 2014). He was Mayor of Sligo in 2004 and was Chairman of Sligo County Council in 1986.
