In the 1960s, national parks in the Netherlands were defined as areas of at least 10 square kilometres (3.9 sq mi) consisting of natural terrains, water and/or forests, with a special landscape and flora and fauna. [1] The first two national parks were founded in the 1930s by private organisations.
Because the island is isolated, because the use of cars by visitors is forbidden and because there are very few inhabitants and farmers on the island, it is one of the best protected Dutch national parks. There is a visitors centre in the village of Schiermonnikoog. There is one campground and there are several hotels and restaurants.
