Kaien Shiba (志波 海燕, Shiba Kaien) was a former lieutenant of Squad Thirteen, which his wife Miyako Shiba also belonged to. He is the brother of Ganju and Kūkaku Shiba. Kaien's physical appearance closely resembles that of Ichigo, a fact noted by Byakuya early on in the series.
He adopted the surname of his wife, Kurosaki, but was originally a member of the Shiba clan, making him relatives of Ganju, Kūkaku and Kaien Shiba. The goofy, energetic, and fun-loving demeanor he typically presents belies his discerning eye and wisdom, which his eldest son, Ichigo, has been able to rely on at points in the series.
