A warforged in D&D 5e is defined as living, as a humanoid, and as fully sentient. The method by which they are animated is not well known; it is not by an elemental spirit or some other automatic method. A player can control a warforged character as freely as any other character, and they appear to have free will.
In addition to that, 3.5e had a great many Eberron supplements (where 5e has just Eberron: Rising from the Last War), giving space for more details like this: Needs. Warforged need little to survive: not sleep, food, or even air to breathe. Warforged need only shelter from extremes of cold and heat, and to repair damage done to their bodies.
As of 5e's published release and the Unearthed Arcana article, Warforged are treated no differently than PCs of other races. Integrated Version–Warforged can integrate weapons into their bodies due to the constructed nature. Warforged can integrate one light weapon, melee or ranged. The weapon they can integrate is the one with which they have proficiency. If not deployed, You can have an advantage on deception and stealth checks to conceal the weapon.
With the release of Eberron: Rising From the Last War, we have an official weight/height generation for 5e Warforged that is the same as the 3.5e one. That being said, they also removed the subraces for Warforged in this publication so there sadly isn't more clarification on this.
(That version of warforged was identical to the version in UA: Eberron Races.) However, as the most recent iteration of the Warforged (published in Eberron: Rising from the Last War) has changed this wording so significantly, the question is worth revisiting. (My player also intends to switch to the new published version once they gain a level.)

I'm trying to figure out the most optimized build for quite a specific setup using a Warforged with multi-class Artificer. Specifically I'm looking for a character that come across as durable and dangerous in melee combat, while also being able to provide some of the unique quirks Artificers can offer (like infusions, etc).

Beyond these common elements of warforged design, the precise materials and build of a warforged vary based on the purpose for which it was designed.
