Since many different track gauges exist worldwide, gauge differences often present a barrier to wider operation on railway networks.

This means that if a standard gauge railway, in Europe, is adapted for dual gauge, bridges must be rebuilt, double tracks must be placed further apart and the overhead wire must be raised. The track centres can be as closely spaced and as cheap as possible, but maintenance must be done on the side. Signals for bi-directional working cannot be mounted between the tracks, so they must be mounted on the 'wrong' side of the line or on expensive signal bridges. For standard gauge tracks the distance may be 4 metres (13 ft) or less.
