One form is as a complete line dance, consisting of approximately 25 steps. [1] Other forms may include a simplified two-step followed by a shoulder-brushing motion with the back of the opposite hand. In some respects, the maneuver is a homage to the vibrant dance culture that permeated dance clubs of the Harlem area during the Harlem Renaissance.
The dance has a three measure pattern, repeated throughout the dance; two measures moving to the dancer's right, one moving to the left, so the line moves slowly to the right. Yove male mome is a complicated line dance performed in a curved line or open circle, with each dancer holding their neighbours by the belt. Dancers may also hold hands if belts are not available. One common version has seven patterns of four bars each.
