Ulyanovsk, [a] known as Simbirsk [b] until 1924, is a city and the administrative center of Ulyanovsk Oblast, Russia, located on the Volga River 705 kilometers (438 mi) east of Moscow. Ulyanovsk has been the only Russian UNESCO City of Literature since 2015.

The Barysh (Russian: Бары́ш) is a river in Ulyanovsk Oblast, Russia. It is a right tributary of the Sura (in Volga's drainage basin). It is 247 kilometres (153 mi) long, and has a drainage basin of 5,800 square kilometres (2,200 sq mi). [1] The river flows over the northern parts of the Volga Upland. It is frozen over from November to April.
In Asia the river was known by its other Turkic name Sarı-su 'yellow water', but the Oirats also used their own name, Ijil mörön or 'adaptation river'. Presently the Mari, another Uralic group, call the river Jul (Юл), meaning 'way' in Tatar. Formerly, they called the river Volgydo, a borrowing from Old East Slavic. [citation needed]
The main source of the Sviyaga River originates from a wood-bog, and is a small pure streamlet which flows into a deep broad gully with hygrophyte vegetation. The second source is located near the village of Krasnaya Polyana. It is in poor condition due to the conduct of business such as livestock which trample the area.
