The Sawtooth Range and In-Ko-Pah Mountains are adjacent to the east. The Santa Rosa Mountains lie further to the northeast. The Cuyamaca Mountains are adjacent along the west. The southern section is in the Mountain Empire region of San Diego County, and the northern section is in the East County region.
The Cerro San Isidro, located in Tijuana, is separated from the rest of the range by the border fence and the Rio Alamar, and forms the southern portion of the mountains. The summit of the Cerro San Isidro reaches approximately 2,750 feet (840 m), and supports many of the same endemic and rare plants found on Otay Mountain. [ 5 ]

The Santa Rosa Mountains extend for approximately 30 miles (48 km) along the western side of the Coachella Valley within Riverside, San Diego, and Imperial Counties in Southern California. The range connects to the San Jacinto Mountains on its northern end, where the Pines to Palms Highway—California State Route 74, crosses them. [1]
The Volcans are a northwest–southeast range with an approximate length of 13 miles (21 km) and width of 7.5 miles (12.1 km). They define the western side of San Felipe Valley, with the San Felipe Hills defining the east side. Julian and the historic Coleman gold mining district lie on the southern margin of the range. [2]
The range's highest peaks are Cuyamaca Peak at 6,512 feet (1,985 m), North Peak at 5,993 feet (1,827 m), Middle Peak at 5,883 feet (1,793 m), and Stonewall Peak at 5,700 feet (1,700 m). [3] The San Diego River and the Sweetwater River both have headwaters in the Cuyamacas. The Cuyamaca Reservoir lies adjacent to the east side of the range.

They are bounded on the northwest by San Mateo Creek, on the northeast by Teneja Canyon Creek, on the east by De Luz Creek and on the south by Las Pulgas Canyon. On the southwest they descend into the coastal foothills in the Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. The range's highest summit is Margarita Peak, at an elevation of 3136 feet. [2]
