The range's highest peaks are Cuyamaca Peak at 6,512 feet (1,985 m), North Peak at 5,993 feet (1,827 m), Middle Peak at 5,883 feet (1,793 m), and Stonewall Peak at 5,700 feet (1,700 m). [3] The San Diego River and the Sweetwater River both have headwaters in the Cuyamacas. The Cuyamaca Reservoir lies adjacent to the east side of the range.
They are bounded on the northwest by San Mateo Creek, on the northeast by Teneja Canyon Creek, on the east by De Luz Creek and on the south by Las Pulgas Canyon. On the southwest they descend into the coastal foothills in the Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. The range's highest summit is Margarita Peak, at an elevation of 3136 feet. [2]
On the eastern side of the Laguna Mountains in San Diego County, Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is known for its springtime profusion of Colorado Desert (Sonoran) wildflowers. On the eastern (Gulf of California) side of the southern portion of the ranges, the Gulf of California xeric scrub ecoregion covers the range in Baja California Sur.
The Cerro San Isidro, located in Tijuana, is separated from the rest of the range by the border fence and the Rio Alamar, and forms the southern portion of the mountains. The summit of the Cerro San Isidro reaches approximately 2,750 feet (840 m), and supports many of the same endemic and rare plants found on Otay Mountain. [ 5 ]
The range connects to the San Jacinto Mountains on its northern end, where the Pines to Palms Highway—California State Route 74, crosses them. The range is approximately 11.5 miles (18.5 km) long, and Table Mountain at the southeast end of the range is located about 3 miles (4.8 km) northeast of the town of Jacumba. [ 3 ] The Tierra Blanca Mountains and the Sawtooth Mountains are to the northwest, and Anza-Borrego Desert State Park due north.
