The rupee was worth one shilling and sixpence in sterling in 1947.

Announced on 8 November 2016, it followed the demonetisation of ₹ 500 and ₹ 1000 banknotes of the original Mahatma Gandhi
For example: 150,000 rupees is "1.5 lakh rupees" which can be written as "1,50,000 rupees", and 30,000,000 (thirty million) rupees is referred to as "3 crore rupees" which is can be written as "3,00,00,000 rupees". There are names for numbers larger than crore, but they are less commonly used.

From 1977, banknotes were issued by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka. 20 rupees notes were introduced in 1979, followed by 500 and 1000 rupees in 1981, 200 rupees in 1998 and 2000 rupees in 2006.
