The eyes are large, even larger than those of nightjars. As in many species of nocturnal birds , they reflect the light of flashlights. Common potoos are 34–38 cm (13–15 in) long with mottled red-brown, white, black, and grey cryptic plumage. [9] This disruptive coloration allows the potoo to camouflage into branches. [ 10 ] The sexes appear similar, and cannot be distinguished upon observation. [ 11 ]
The great potoo has a large head in relation to its body. The eyes are also very large with dark brown iris rather than the yellow that many other potoo have [7] and has a short but broad beak. Their wings are elliptical in shape and the tail is elongated. The feather colors vary with white, gray, black, and burgundy.
