History Jackson College in 1889. Jackson State University developed from Natchez Seminary, founded October 23, 1877, in Natchez, Mississippi.The seminary was affiliated with the American Baptist Home Mission Society of New York, who established it "for the moral, religious, and intellectual improvement of Christian leaders of the colored people of Mississippi and the neighboring states".

Tougaloo College is a private historically black college in the Tougaloo area of Jackson, Mississippi, United States. It is affiliated with the United Church of Christ and Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). It was established in 1869 by New York –based Christian missionaries for the education of freed slaves and their offspring.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the parish has a total area of 204 square miles (530 km 2), of which 192 square miles (500 km 2) is land and 11 square miles (28 km 2) (5.6%) is water. It is the second-smallest parish in Louisiana by land area and smallest by total area. The southwestern portion of the parish is uninhabited timberland.
Founded as Mary Holmes Seminary in Jackson, Mississippi, the college began as the brainchild of Reverend Mead Holmes (1819–1906), a Presbyterian missionary, and his daughter, Mary Emilie Holmes (1850–1906). They wanted to start a "literary and industrial school" for young black women in honor of Rev. Holmes's late wife, Mary D. Holmes.
