This Republic of Korea medal was offered in the 1970s, I believe, to the US government to be presented to US military personnel for service in the ROK after the Korean War. The Department of Defense declined. Some were actually prepared with certificates for award to US Army soldiers, but they were impounded by the Army.

    The Korean Service Medal is just like the Vietnam Service medal and the World War II Europe, Africa. Middle East Campaign and the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign medals. Stars were affixed to the ribbons and medals to denote participation in various campaigns.

    I have the medals of a soldier who, according to records, was not in Korea during the war, but has a Korean service medal. He also received the United Nations Korea Medal. What did he get the medals for? He probably wasn't even in the army at the time of the Korean War. Later he was in Laos / White Star/ and Vietnam.

    The Secretary issued order that granted my Parachute and Glider wings, the Korean presidential Unit Citation (KPUC) and the Korean War Service Medal (looks like the KPUC without medal border. I was not aware of receiving the KPUC or the Korean War Service medal before 2012.

    Your ship was authorized the Armed Forced Expeditionary Medal for service in 1970 for several dates from January and August so that seems to check out. Since your DD-214 mentions Korea after it, I would say that the Korean Defense Service Medal would be correct also. Based on that I would say you are fine.
