Canada's first indoor mall was the Lister Block, originally opened in 1852, in Hamilton, Ontario. [1] The Lister Block was destroyed by fire and rebuilt in 1924. [2] In 2011 the building was completely rebuilt. [3] Opened in 1949, the first shopping mall in Canada is the Norgate shopping centre, a strip mall in Saint-Laurent, Montreal, Quebec.

The International Council of Shopping Centers, based in New York City, classifies two types of shopping centers as malls: regional malls and super regional malls.A regional mall, per the International Council of Shopping Centers, is a shopping mall with 400,000 sq ft (37,000 m 2) to 800,000 sq ft (74,000 m 2) gross leasable area with at least two anchor stores.
