There is an earlier, and very romantic, "Goodnight, Sweetheart," first recorded by Rudee Vallee in 1931. It says it is by Jack Gordon, and is available on Youtube. It became popular again during World War Two, which is when I heard it first.
During this time, Noble co-wrote "Turkish Delight", "By the Fireside" and "Goodnight, Sweetheart". The latter song was a number one hit for Guy Lombardo in the American charts. It was also used (with vocals by Al Bowlly) on the original Star Trek television series episode "The City on the Edge of Forever". [6]
The song was later recorded by Judy Garland, Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, and many others. They had further success in 1931 with " Goodnight Sweetheart ," written with composer Ray Noble and recorded by Guy Lombardo , Al Bowlly and Rudy Vallee among others.
