George Joshua Richard Monbiot (/ ˈ m ɒ n b i oʊ / MON-bee-oh; born 27 January 1963) is a British journalist, author, and environmental and political activist. He writes a regular column for The Guardian and has written several books. Monbiot grew up in Oxfordshire and studied zoology at the University of Oxford.

Having first referred to a child's coming of age, the poem describes a number of (particularly fatal) misfortunes which may then befall one: a youth's premature death, famine, warfare and infirmity, the deprivations of a traveller, death at the gallows or on the pyre and self-destructive behaviour through intemperate drinking.
The poem's three unemotional quatrains are written in iambic trimeter with only line 5 in iambic tetrameter. Lines 1 and 3 (and others) end with extra syllables. The rhyme scheme is abcb. The poem's "success" theme is treated paradoxically: Only those who know defeat can truly appreciate success. Alliteration enhances the poem's lyricism.
