On January 1, 1986 a two-day riot began at the West Virginia State Penitentiary resulted in three inmate deaths. [3] The Eastern Regional Jail in Martinsburg, the first of the state's 10 regional jails opened in May 1989. The regional jails would gradually replace the 55 county jails. [4]
The West Virginia & Regional History Center (WVRHC), [1] is the largest archival collection housing documents and manuscripts involving West Virginia and the surrounding central Appalachian region. [2] Because of name changes over the years, it is sometimes referred to as the "West Virginia Collection."

Friendly City Building and Jail is a historic town hall and jail located at Friendly, Tyler County, West Virginia. It was built in 1901, and is a small, one story frame building. It has a gable roof and sits on a stone foundation. It has two rooms, the meeting room and jail cell.
