USS America (CVA/CV-66) was one of three Kitty Hawk-class supercarriers built for the United States Navy in the 1960s. Commissioned in 1965, she spent most of her career in the Atlantic and Mediterranean, but did make three Pacific deployments serving in the Vietnam War .

Instead of two forward anchors, one on each side, America had no port side anchor and an additional anchor astern, a change made to accommodate the AN/SQS-23 sonar. America was the only post-World War II U.S. carrier to be built with sonar, which was however removed in the early 1980s. She also had a narrow smokestack compared to prior units.
The CVA is an association of sailors who served aboard USS America (CV-66). The carrier was decommissioned in 1996 and scuttled in 2005 in the Atlantic, as part of a damage test of large deck aircraft carriers. [34] The name "America" was instead assigned to USS America (LHA-6), an amphibious assault ship commissioned in 2014. [35] [36]
In July 2017, America was attached to the 15th MEU for Western Pacific 17-2 (WESTPAC 17-2). [30] Their main mission was the supporting of Operation Inherent Resolve. [31] During their deployment, Marines and Sailors aboard the America came to the aid of the USS John S. McCain at Changi Naval Base after the USS John S. McCain and Alnic MC collision.
A U.S. Navy McDonnell F-4J-29-MC Phantom II (BuNo 153787) from Fighter Squadron 74 (VF-74) "Be-Devilers" lands aboard the aircraft carrier USS America (CVA-66). VF-74 was assigned to Attack Carrier Air Wing Eight (CVW-8) aboard the America for a deployment to Vietnam from 5 June 1972 to 24 March 1973.
