The area is the southernmost part of the county of Glamorgan.Between the 11th century and 1536 the area was part of the Lordship of Glamorgan. In medieval times, the village of Cosmeston, near what is today Penarth in the south east of the county, grew up around a fortified manor house constructed sometime around the 12th century by the De Costentin family. Barry's stretch of coast, on the Bristol Channel, has the world's second highest tidal range of 15 metres (49 ft), [1] second only to the Bay of Fundy in Nova Scotia, Atlantic Canada. [ 2 ] The peninsula was an island until the 1880s when it was linked to the mainland as the town of Barry expanded.
