Alabama is an American country music band formed in Fort Payne, Alabama, in 1969. The band was founded by Randy Owen (lead vocals, rhythm guitar) and his cousin Teddy Gentry (bass, backing vocals). They were soon joined by another cousin, Jeff Cook (lead guitar, fiddle, and keyboards).
Anna Mae Winburn (née Darden; August 13, 1913 – September 30, 1999) was an American vocalist and jazz bandleader who flourished beginning in the mid-1930s. An African-American, she is best known for having directed the International Sweethearts of Rhythm, an all-female big band that was perhaps one of the few – and one of the most – racially integrated dance-bands of the swing era. He stopped touring regularly with Alabama in 2018, [6] but did join the band for their 50th Anniversary tour in 2022. [7] Cook died of complications from Parkinson's disease in Destin, Florida , on November 7, 2022, at the age of 73.

The original members of the band had met in Mississippi in 1938 at the Piney Woods Country Life School, a school for poor and African American children.
