The Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria was raised to commemorate the Voortrekkers who left the Cape Colony between 1835 and 1854. Conflict amongst the Voortrekkers was a problem because the trek levelled out the pre-existing class hierarchy which had previously enforced discipline, and thus social cohesion broke down.
The central curved building behind the colonnade houses the committee rooms, a library and conference rooms while the basement contains the kitchen, dining rooms and lounges. The interior is treated in the Cape Dutch style: carved teak fanlights, heavy doors, dark ceiling beams contrasting with white plaster walls and heavy wood furniture.
The area is an open terrace with an entrance gate and inside is a monument situated on rocks. On the left of the Lindley road, twenty kilometres south of Heilbron, one sees a long, narrow ridge. This is the famous Vegkop on the farm officially named Vechtkop Oost, where the Voortrekkers were attacked by a strong Matabele force in October, 1836.
