The Net tonnage calculation is defined in Regulation 4 of Annex 1 of The International Convention on Tonnage Measurement of Ships, 1969. It is based on three main variables: V c, the total volume of the ship's cargo spaces in cubic meters (m³), d, the ship's moulded draft amidships in meters, and; D, the ship's moulded depth amidships in metres
Note that the m³ gas conversion factor takes into account a difference in the standard temperature base for measurement of gas volumes in metric and imperial units. The standard temperature for metric measurement is 15 degrees Celsius (i.e. 59 degrees Fahrenheit) while for English measurement the standard temperature is 60 °F.
A cubic ton is an antiquated measure of volume, varying based on the commodity from about 16 to 45 cu ft (0.45 to 1.27 m 3). It is now only used for lumber, for which one cubic ton is equivalent to 40 cu ft (1.1 m 3).
