Schoolcraft College was established in 1961. Originally named Northwest Wayne County Community College, the name of the college was changed because of the length. [3] On February 6, 1963, the college officially changed the name to Schoolcraft College, after an American geologist Henry Schoolcraft.
It is the site of the Wayne County Community College Downriver Campus, Michigan State Police Metro South Post, Southland Center, a sports complex called the Taylor Sportsplex, Oakwood Heritage Hospital, Taylor Meadows and Lakes of Taylor golf courses, Wallside Windows Factory, Cruisin' Telegraph, and Heritage Park.
Taylor is home to the Southland Center, Taylor Sportsplex, Beaumont Hospital – Taylor, the Downriver Campus of the Wayne County Community College District, and is the founding location of Hungry Howie's Pizza. The city was also home to the now-demolished Gibraltar Trade Center.
