Alaska Airlines Flight 2059 was a scheduled domestic flight operated by Horizon Air for Alaska Airlines that was traveling from Paine Field in Everett, Washington, to San Francisco International Airport on October 22, 2023, when an off-duty pilot deadheading in the jump seat of the cockpit reportedly attempted to crash the plane by disabling its engines.
During that same year, full-rate production of the E-Jet commenced; this activity was centred around a recently-completed factory built by Embraer at its São José dos Campos base. [14] After a positive response from the airline community, Embraer launched the E175, which stretched the fuselage of the E170 by 1.78 metres (5.8 ft). [15]
The E175-E2 exceeds this limit by 5,400 kg (12,000 lb), due to its heavier geared turbofan engines. [65] [66] The E175-E2 prototype first flew on 12 December 2019 from São José dos Campos and flew for 2 hours and 18 minutes, starting a test and certification campaign that was expected to take 24 months and involve two additional aircraft. [67]
The Embraer 175 made its United States domestic debut when the first aircraft was delivered to Republic Airways in March 2007. Total orders were for 36 aircraft, which were operated in an 80-seat configuration under the US Airways Express brand name. [15] In July 2010, Republic ordered a further 24 Embraer E190 aircraft. Off-duty pilot Joseph D. Emerson was charged with 83 counts of attempted murder after he allegedly tried to crash a plane mid-flight. The motive remains a mystery. Martha McHardy reports
