Bucklebury was a royal manor owned by Edward the Confessor (reigned 1042–66). [3] The village and parish church are recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086. The door and bridge have survived to this day, although some of the moat has now dried up. The hall, renamed Chingle Hall, remained in the possession of the Singleton family until Eleanor Singleton, the last of the line, died in 1585. The house then passed to the Wall family through the marriage of William Wall with Anne Singleton.
