The Madhesh Provincial Assembly (Nepali/Maithili/Bhojpuri: मधेश प्रदेश सभा) is a unicameral governing and law making body of Madhesh Province, one of the seven Provinces in Nepal, The assembly is seated in the provincial capital at Janakpur in Dhanusha District.
Madhesh Province is a province of Nepal in the Terai region with an area of 9,661 km 2 (3,730 sq mi) covering about 6.5% of the country's total area. It has a population of 6,126,288 as per the 2021 Nepal census , making it Nepal's most densely populated province and the smallest province by area.
The legislative structure of the province is unicameral. The Provincial Assembly of Madhesh Province consists of 107 members who are elected for five-year terms. The province contributes 32 seats to the lower house of the Parliament of Nepal, the House of Representatives and 8 seats to the upper house, the National Assembly. [4] [5]
Gaunpalika (Nepali: गाउँपालिका, romanized: gāunpālikā, lit. 'Rural municipal') is the newly formed lower administrative division in Nepal. [1] [2] This administrative division was established in 2017, and replaced the existing village development committees.
In addition to this, the chief minister must be the parliamentary party leader of the party with the majority seats in the provincial assembly. If no party has a majority, the chief minister must have a majority in the assembly with the support from other parties.
The 2nd Madhesh Provincial Assembly was elected through the provincial elections held on 20 November 2022. [1] The assembly has 64 constituency seats in which members are elected through direct elections and 43 proportional representation party list seats. The term of the assembly is 5 years unless dissolved earlier.
