Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport (IATA: ATL, ICAO: KATL, FAA LID: ATL) is the primary international airport serving Atlanta and its surrounding metropolitan area, in the U.S. state of Georgia. The airport is located 10 mi (16 km; 8.7 nmi) south of the Downtown Atlanta district.
There are 38 Grade One circuits with 45 layouts. Circuits holding Grade One certification may host events involving "Automobiles of Groups D (FIA International Formula) and E (Free Formula) with a weight/power ratio of less than 1 kg/hp." [1] As such, a Grade One certification is required to host events involving Formula One cars.
The airport was originally named Bear Creek Airport and was built in the late 60's and operated by a Mr. Morris. In July 2005, the airport and the adjacent speedway were hit by an F2 tornado on the evening of July 6. Millions of dollars in damage was done to the airport, in addition to the tens of millions at the speedway.
