Araucaria angustifolia, the Paraná pine, Brazilian pine or candelabra tree (pinheiro-do-paraná, araucária or pinheiro brasileiro), is a critically endangered species in the conifer genus Araucaria. Although the common names in various languages refer to the species as a "pine", it does not belong in the genus Pinus.
Araucaria (/ æ r ɔː ˈ k ɛər i ə /; original pronunciation: [a.ɾawˈka.ɾja]) [2] is a genus of evergreen coniferous trees in the family Araucariaceae. While today they are largely confined to the Southern Hemisphere, during the Jurassic and Cretaceous they were globally distributed.
It was originally set aside to preserve exceptional remnant forests of the Paraná pine, Araucaria angustifolia. It is now also popular for alpinism. [3] The park adjoins the 1,330 hectares (3,300 acres) Serra Furada State Park, created in 1980. [4] Temperatures range from 0 to 28 °C (32 to 82 °F), with an average of 12 °C (54 °F).
Araucariaceae is a family of conifers with three living genera, Araucaria, Agathis, and Wollemia. While the family's native distribution is now largely confined to the Southern Hemisphere, except for a few species of Agathis in Malesia, it was formerly widespread in the Northern Hemisphere during the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods.
The conifer Brazilian araucaria (Araucaria angustifolia) forms an emergent layer, growing up to 45 metres (148 ft) in height. The forests are significant from an evolutionary perspective, as a relict of mixed coniferous and broadleaved forests that were once much more widespread, and are home to many taxa characteristic of the Antarctic flora .
