To better reflect the changing roles and responsibilities of the fire service, Avon Fire Brigade changed its name to Avon Fire & Rescue Service. [2] Fleur Lombard (1974 – 4 February 1996 [3]) was the first female firefighter to die on duty in peacetime Britain, while Avon Fire and Rescue Service were fighting a supermarket fire in Staple Hill.

When the Service was created in 1974, it was named "The County of Avon Fire Brigade". All fire appliances had "County of Avon" on the sides. The name was changed in 1996 to "Avon Fire Brigade" to show that the County no longer existed. In 2004, the third name change occurred to reflect the nature of current jobs: "Avon Fire and Rescue Service".
