The first Methodist Chapel in Derby was built in St Michael's Lane in 1765. In 1805 a chapel was built in King-street to accommodate a congregation of 800 people. By 1840 it was insufficient for the congregation and a new building was planned.
The church was re-pewed with open seats. A new stained-glass window by William Wailes of Newcastle was inserted at the east end of the chancel. There is a stained-glass window by Charles Kempe, which was removed from Derwent Chapel before it was submerged under the Ladybower Reservoir. The church was tiled with Minton encaustic tiles.
