Burkitt lymphoma is not common in adults, but has worse outcomes than in children. [5] If treatment with an initial chemotherapy regimen of cyclophosphamide , vincristine , prednisolone , and/or other drugs fails to produce meaningful remission or regression , this usually indicates a more severe outcome. [ 16 ]
Burkitt lymphoma occurs in three forms. Epidemic Burkitt lymphoma (eBL) is common in Africa, the Middle East, Brazil, Papua New Guinea, and other areas where malaria is endemic. It usually presents in children 4–7 years old and in almost all cases is associated with EBV infection. [31] Sporadic Burkitt lymphoma (sBL) is rare.
Individuals presenting with the PAL form of DLBCL-CI have typically been elderly males (male to female ratio 4:1 [15] to 12:1 [16]) with a median age of 67 years (range 46–86 years). [12] Most of these individuals have been Japanese with a long (median 37 years) history of pyothorax due to tuberculosis previously treated with a pneumothorax. [16]
Aggressive lymphoma, also known as high-grade lymphoma, is a group of fast growing non-Hodgkin lymphoma. [1]There are several subtypes of aggressive lymphoma. These include AIDS-associated lymphoma, angioimmunoblastic lymphoma, Burkitt lymphoma, central nervous system (CNS) lymphoma, diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) and peripheral T-cell lymphoma. [1]
In contrast, reactivation in adults usually occurs without symptoms of illness. EBV also establishes a lifelong dormant infection in some cells of the body's immune system. A late event in a very few carriers of this virus is the emergence of Burkitt's lymphoma and nasopharyngeal carcinoma, two rare cancers.
AIDS-related lymphoma describes lymphomas occurring in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (). [1] [2]A lymphoma is a type of cancer arising from lymphoid cells. In AIDS, the incidence of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, primary cerebral lymphoma and Hodgkin's disease are all increased.
Boys with X-linked immunodeficiency syndrome are at a higher risk of mortality associated with Epstein–Barr virus infections, and are predisposed to develop a lymphoproliferative disorder or lymphoma. [citation needed] Children with common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) are also at a higher risk of developing a lymphoproliferative disorder.
Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a type of B-cell lymphoma and one of the rarest forms of non-Hodgkin's lymphomas comprising approximately 6% of diagnosed cases. [75] Burkitt lymphoma: C83.7: 1784: Burkitt lymphoma (also known as Burkitt's tumor or malignant lymphoma, Burkitt's type) is a type of B-cell lymphoma that is categorized into one of ...
