The T4 virus initiates an Escherichia coli infection by binding OmpC porin proteins and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) on the surface of E. coli cells with its long tail fibers (LTF). [16] [17] A recognition signal is sent through the LTFs to the baseplate. This unravels the short tail fibers (STF) that bind irreversibly to the E. coli cell surface.
In 1993, it was renamed again to T4-like phages, and was moved into the newly created order Caudovirales in 1998. The next year (1999), it was renamed to T4-like viruses. Once more, the genus was moved into the newly created subfamily Tevenvirinae in 2010-11, renamed to T4likevirus in 2012, and renamed again to T4virus in 2015.

Schematic drawings of a phage virion (species Escherichia virus T4, cross sections and side view) Viruses in Tevenvirinae are non-enveloped, with head-tail geometries. These viruses are about 70 nm wide and 140 nm long. Genomes are linear, around 170-245kb in length. The genome codes for 300 to 415 proteins. [3]

The first phages that were studied in detail included seven that commonly infect E. coli. They were named Type 1 (T1), Type 2 (T2), etc., for easy reference; however, due to structural similarities between the T2, T4, and T6 bacteriophages, these are now commonly referred to as T-Even phages .

There is an association between asymptomatic bacteriuria in pregnant women with low birth weight, preterm delivery, cystitis, infection of the newborn and fetus death. [8] [13] [10] However, most of these studies were graded as poor quality. [8] Bacteriuria in pregnancy also increases the risk of preeclampsia. [13]
