The National Inventory of Dams defines any "major dam" as being 50 feet (15 m) tall with a storage capacity of at least 5,000 acre-feet (6,200,000 m 3), or of any height with a storage capacity of 25,000 acre-feet (31,000,000 m 3).

As of 2025, plans exist in the Democratic Republic of the Congo for the construction of a hydroelectric power station set to overtake the Three Gorges, [3] with an installed capacity of 39,000 MW.
The China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG; Chinese: 中国长江三峡集团公司) is a Chinese state-owned power company, established on 27 September 1993. The company was responsible for the construction of the Three Gorges Dam -project, the world's largest hydroelectric power plant, that went into operation in 2008.
The tallest dam in China is the Jinping-I Dam at 305 m (1,001 ft), an arch dam, which is also the tallest dam in the world. The largest reservoir is created by the Three Gorges Dam, which stores 39.3 billion m 3 (31,900,000 acre feet) of water and has a surface area of 1,045 km 2 (403 sq mi). Three Gorges is also the world's largest power station.

The valley of the Three Gorges Reservoir Region below 500 m has an annual temperature 17–19 °C and, with the frost-free period annually lasts 300–340 days. The annual runoff flow at the site of the dam of the Three Gorges Project is 451 billion m³ with the annual sediment discharge of 530 million tons.
The dam is a 289-meter-tall double-curvature arch dam with a crest elevation of 827 m, and a width of 72 m at the base and 13 m at the crest. [4] It is considered to be the last large hydropower project in China after a series of projects starting with the Three Gorges Dam. [5] It is also the second largest hydropower plant in the world.
