Epsom Downs is a Grade 1 racecourse in a hilly area near Epsom in Surrey, England which is used for thoroughbred horse racing. The "Downs" referred to in the name are part of the North Downs . The course has a crowd capacity of 130,000 including people watching from the Epsom Downs , an area freely open to the public. [ 1 ]
Epsom Downs is an area of chalk upland near Epsom, Surrey; [1] in the North Downs. Part of the area is taken up by the racecourse , the gallops are part of the land purchased by Stanly Wootton in 1925 and are open to users such as ramblers , model aircraft flyers, golfers and cyclists .
Epsom Downs railway station is in the Borough of Reigate and Banstead [a] in Surrey. The station, and all trains serving it, are operated by Southern . It is on the Epsom Downs line 18 miles 57 chains (18.71 miles, 30.11 km) down the line from London Bridge , measured via West Croydon. [ 3 ]

[46] The goods yard at Belmont closed on 6 January 1969 [31] and the signal box at the station closed on 21 December the same year. Horton, to the west of the centre, is the former location of five psychiatric hospitals, which were redeveloped to provide housing in the early 2000s. [11]
The in-field at Epsom, however, was open to the public, making it difficult to maintain in racing condition. In 1985 legislation was passed allowing the racecourse to fence off part of Epsom Downs and charge for public admission to the in-field. Consequently the race was reduced to a mile and a half and run over the main Derby course. [4]

It is on the Epsom Downs branch line, which is served as part of Southern's Sutton & Mole Valley Line services. It is between Belmont and Epsom Downs, 17 miles 40 chains (17.50 miles, 28.16 km) down the line from London Bridge, measured via West Croydon. [2] Housing and gardens in Banstead in this area border Greater London 500m away to the north.
