Epsom Downs is a Grade 1 racecourse in a hilly area near Epsom in Surrey, England which is used for thoroughbred horse racing. The "Downs" referred to in the name are part of the North Downs . The in-field at Epsom, however, was open to the public, making it difficult to maintain in racing condition. In 1985 legislation was passed allowing the racecourse to fence off part of Epsom Downs and charge for public admission to the in-field. Consequently the race was reduced to a mile and a half and run over the main Derby course. [4]
Its distance is the same as that of both the Oaks and the Epsom Derby, and it often features horses who competed in those events in the preceding seasons. The race was run on the Thursday of the Derby meeting until 1994, it was run on a Saturday in 1975 (This was due to the European Community Membership referendum on the Thursday), 1995-97 ...
It is run at Epsom Downs over a distance of 1 mile, 4 furlongs and 6 yards (2,420 metres), about 1½ miles, and it is scheduled to take place each year in late May or early June. It is the second-oldest of the five Classic races, after the St Leger .
Epsom Down in the southern town outlands of Epsom was used as a venue for two first-class cricket matches between 1816 and 1819. Both were between the local Epsom Cricket Club and the Hampshire county team. [1] The approximate site is Epsom Downs Racecourse.
