JD Sports Fashion plc, commonly known as JD Sports, JD or JD Group [3] is a British multinational sports-fashion retail company based in Bury, Greater Manchester, England. It is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index. The Pentland Group owns 55% of the company. [4]
Opened shops in numerous city locations. At one time owned by the Forte Group, it was purchased by Jerónimo Martins in 1996. The business struggled in the competitive UK sports market and in 2002 was sold to Sports Direct. Shops were changed to Sports Direct or closed between 2002 and 2012, leaving the Regent Street shop as the sole location.
Blacks is the largest outdoor retailer in the UK with stores nationwide. The company entered administration in 2012 and is now owned by JD Sports Fashion plc. JD made a cash offer of £20 million for the majority of the retailer's 300 UK stores and said it will retain the majority of Blacks' 3,500 staff. [1]
In September 2013, a branch of rival clothing chain Topshop opened in Friars Square, in a newly constructed part in the middle of the main shopping mall. [13] That closed down, and JD Sports now occupies the space. In October 2017, a branch of Smiggle specialising in stationery products opened. [14]

Fuelled by a record-breaking performance from JD Sports Fashion, Pentland Group’s revenue soared 38.9% to £5.1bn for the year to 31 December 2018, with Group operating up by 9.3% to £411m.
