The Sugarhill Gang is an American hip hop group formed in Englewood, New Jersey in 1979.Their hit "Rapper's Delight", released the same year they were formed, was the first rap single to become a top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, [1] reaching a peak position of number 36 on January 12, 1980. [2]
In 1996, Sir Mix-A-Lot played off the lyrics to the Sugarhill Gang's version of "Apache" in his hit "Jump on It", released on the album Return of the Bumpasaurus. The lyrics contain the names of several cities in the United States. [45] It was used as the beat and background music on the song "We Run This" on Missy Elliott's album The Cookbook.
