Rapid City is located on the eastern edge of the Black Hills, and has developed on each side of the Dakota Hogback. Rapid City's "Westside" is located in the Red Valley between the foothills of the Black Hills proper and the Dakota Hogback, so named for the red Spearfish formation soils and the way the valley completely encircles the Black Hills.

South Dakota Highway 79 (SD 79) is a 209-mile (336 km) state highway in western South Dakota, United States, that runs from Maverick Junction near the Black Hills National Forest to the North Dakota state line.

The park was created on August 16, 1959, and was the product of donations from residents of Rapid City along with many local clubs and businesses at the time.The park has been open every year since its creation except for the year of the 1972 Black Hills flood, which caused extensive damage to the park and surrounding community.
