It covers an area of 18,034.0 km 2 (note that the province-level Statistics Bureau gives an alternate area figure of 14,068.37 km 2), and had a population of 32,971 at the 2010 Census [2] and 41,515 at the 2020 Census; [3] the official estimate as at mid 2023 was 42,680. In 1944, forces led by American general Douglas MacArthur launched a four-phase campaign from neighbouring Papua New Guinea to liberate Dutch New Guinea from the Japanese. Phase 1 was the capture of Hollandia (now Jayapura). Involving 80,000 Allied troops, it was the largest amphibious operation of the war in the southwest Pacific.
