The search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) is a collective term for scientific searches for intelligent extraterrestrial life.Methods include monitoring electromagnetic radiation for signs of transmissions from civilizations on other planets, [1] [2] [3] optical observation, and the search for physical artifacts.

The Hat Creek Radio Observatory (HCRO) is operated by the SETI Institute in the Western United States. The observatory is home to the Allen Telescope Array and one of the three CHIME FRB outriggers , as well a number of other smaller telescopes and instruments.
The institute's SETI researchers use both radio and optical telescope systems to search for deliberate signals from technologically advanced extraterrestrial civilizations.
