A solvent dye is a dye soluble in organic solvents. It is usually used as a solution in an organic solvent. [1] Solvent dyes are used to color organic solvents, hydrocarbon fuels, waxes, lubricants, plastics, and other hydrocarbon-based nonpolar materials. Fuel dyes are one use of solvent dyes.
Another example of a leuco dye is the crystal violet lactone, which in its lactone form is colorless or slightly yellowish, but in low pH, when it is protonated, it becomes intensely violet. [1] Other examples are phenolphthalein and thymolphthalein , colorless in acidic to neutral pH, but becoming pink and blue in alkaline environment.
The dye is soluble only in its reduced form. The fiber is immersed repeatedly in this oxygen-free dyebath, then exposed to the air, whereupon the water-soluble reduced form changes color as oxygen turns it to the water-insoluble form. For these reasons, vat dyes are less suitable than fiber-reactive dyes for amateur use.
