Wilmington is a city in Will County, Illinois, United States. Located on Illinois Route 53 and Historic U.S. Route 66 along the east bank of the Kankakee River, it is approximately 60 miles (97 km) south-west from downtown Chicago. The population was 5,664 at the 2020 census.
1979: J. Michael’s Philly Deli, 3501 Oleander Drive, Wilmington. The restaurant that helped bring cheesesteaks to Wilmington opened in August 1979 in one of the area's original shopping centers.
The Gemini Giant is a landmark statue on U.S. Route 66 in Wilmington, IL. Now installed at the entrance to the South Island Park, the statue previously stood outside the Launching Pad Restaurant from 1965 to 2024. The 30 foot tall statue is one of many giant "Muffler Man" advertising props found throughout the US in the 1960s.
