When I've needed spacers, I've experimented with trying cheerios or oyster crackers in the wad before adding the shot, and that seems to work well. Once I figured out the right addition, I got consistently good crimps. FYI, I started with a LLA loading 12G, and then got a good quality used MEC Jr.

Changed the recipe to ~20grs 700X with a 12S0 wad instead of the 12S3 wad it called for and used 1 1/8oz shot and it loaded perfectly. So I guess to use only 1 oz of shot I need to find a 7/8 oz wad to keep the shot column at the right height.
