The Taylor Park Reservoir is a body of water created by the 1937 Taylor Park Dam, which dams the Taylor River of Colorado, United States. The dam and reservoir, located about 35 miles (56 km) northeast of Gunnison , are part of the Uncompahgre Project in Colorado.
The park is located in a part of Nevada that in prehistoric times was under Lake Lahontan.When the lake had receded lower than the present-day reservoir, by about 23,000 years ago, animals such as camels, horses, rabbits, and squirrels would drink from the river, and some of their fossils have been found about 14 miles (23 km) north of the dam.
In addition to maintaining the dam that creates the reservoir, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers maintains recreational facilities at the lake. Taylor Park, Willis Creek Park, and Wilson H. Fox Park include day use areas for picnics and boat ramps for lake access. Overnight camping at both improved and primitive sites is permitted.
The Taylor River rises between Star Peak and Crystal Peak in Colorado's Elk Mountains in the northeast part of Gunnison County, near the Continental Divide. [2] Flowing southeast, the river goes through Taylor Park Reservoir, created by the Taylor Park Dam. From there it flows southwest.
