WWE ECW (officially known as simply ECW and colloquially known as ECW on Sci-Fi or ECW on Syfy and WWECW, a portmanteau of both "WWE" and "ECW") is an American professional wrestling television program that was produced by WWE, based on the independent Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) promotion that lasted from 1992 to 2001.
The show's name also referred to the ECW brand, in which WWE employees were assigned to work and perform, complementary to WWE's other brands, Raw and SmackDown. It debuted on June 13, 2006 on Sci Fi Channel in the United States and ran for close to four years until it aired its final episode on February 16, 2010 on the rebranded Syfy.
Soon afterwards, the company promoted shows for ECW alumni entitled, One Night Stand in 2005 and in 2006. [4] On May 25, 2006, WWE announced the launch of a new brand, ECW, a revival of original promotion. [5] The new brand would later debut its television show on the Sci Fi Channel on June 13, 2006. [6]
Despite the title of this article, only some are original films produced for the channel, while others are direct-to-video releases picked up for broadcast by Syfy. Previous editors have stated that some were broadcast, between 1999 and 2009, under the Sci Fi Pictures label – as those were the years that the channel was branded Sci Fi.
The first person to qualify for the match was Sabu, who defeated Kevin Thorn on the October 31, 2006 episode of ECW. On May 25, 2006, WWE announced the launch of ECW as a stand-alone brand, congruous to Raw and SmackDown!, with its own show on Sci Fi (now Syfy). [4] On May 29, the WWE held their 2006 brand extension draft.
By 2004, WWE began reintroducing Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) through content from the ECW video library and a series of books, which included the release of The Rise and Fall of ECW. On May 26, 2006, WWE relaunched the franchise with its own show on NBC Universal's Sci Fi Channel, later to be known as Syfy, starting June 13, 2006.
