It is a metrical psalm commonly attributed to the English Puritan Francis Rous and based on the text of Psalm 23 in the Bible. The hymn first appeared in the Scots Metrical Psalter in 1650 traced to a parish in Aberdeenshire. [1] It is commonly sung to the tune Crimond, which is generally credited to Jessie Seymour Irvine. [2]
The King of Love My Shepherd Is is an 1868 hymn with lyrics written by Henry Williams Baker, based on the Welsh version of Psalm 23 and the work of Edmund Prys. [1] [2] [3] It is most often sung to one of four different melodies: "Dominus Regit Me", composed by John Bacchus Dykes, a friend and contemporary of Henry Williams Baker.
The Lord Is My Shepherd is a sacred choral composition by John Rutter, a setting of Psalm 23. The work was published by Oxford University Press in 1978. [1] Marked "Slow but flowing", the music is in C major and 2/4 time. [2] Rutter composed it for Mel Olson and the Chancel Choir of the First United Methodist Church in Omaha, Nebraska. [2]
The 23rd psalm, in which this phrase appears, uses the image of God as a shepherd and the believer as a sheep well cared-for. Julian Morgenstern has suggested that the word translated as "cup" could contain a double meaning: both a "cup" in the normal sense of the word, and a shallow trough from which one would give water to a sheep.
Some adult prayers are equally popular with children, such as the Golden Rule (Luke 6:31, Matthew 7:12), the Doxology, the Serenity Prayer, John 3:16, Psalm 145:15–16, Psalm 136:1, and for older children, The Lord's Prayer and Psalm 23.
This included four-part homophonic settings of many of the psalms (those texts that did not have a proper melody were assigned a melody from another psalm), several more complicated or polyphonic psalm settings (also known as Psalms in Reports), and settings of many of the so-called Common Tunes that had come to be used in the seventeenth century.
" Der Herr ist mein getreuer Hirt" (The Lord is my faithful Shepherd) is a Lutheran hymn in German, a paraphrase of Psalm 23. The text was written by Cornelius Becker, first published in 1598 and again in the Becker Psalter in 1602. Heinrich Schütz set the text to music, using a 1529 tune.
