Egyptian hieroglyphs were added to the Unicode Standard in October 2009 with the release of version 5.2 which introduced the Egyptian Hieroglyphs block (U+13000–U+1342F). As of July 2013 [update] , four fonts, Aegyptus , NewGardiner , Noto Sans Egyptian Hieroglyphs and JSeshFont support this range.
Egyptian Hieroglyph Format Controls is a Unicode block containing formatting characters that enable full formatting of quadrats for Egyptian hieroglyphs. The block size was expanded by 32 code points in Unicode version 15.0 (version 14: 1343F → version 15: 1345F ), and 29 more characters were defined.
The Egyptian Hieroglyphs Unicode block has 94 standardized variants defined to specify rotated signs: [3] [4]. Variation selector-1 (VS1) (U+FE00) can be used to rotate 40 signs by 90°:

With the spread of early Christianity in Egypt, knowledge of Egyptian hieroglyphs was lost by the late third century, as well as Demotic script slightly later, making way for a writing system more closely associated with the Coptic Orthodox Church. By the fourth century, the Coptic script was "standardized", particularly for the Sahidic dialect.
