Nelson's Dockyard is a cultural heritage site and marina in English Harbour, located in Saint Paul Parish on the Caribbean island of Antigua, in Antigua and Barbuda. It is the only continuously working Georgian era dockyard in the world. [1] It was built in the early 18th century and abandoned by the British Royal Navy in 1889.
A grant of $11 million was provided by the Canadian International Development Agency in 1989 to establish a museum on Dow's Hill, to cater for tourists. [2] The museum was sited close to the ruins of the governor's residence. [3] [1] The museum is operated by the Antigua and Barbuda National Parks Authority and is open daily from 9:00 to 17:00. [4]
English Harbour, situated on the southern coast of Antigua, consists of a sequence of deep, narrow bays almost entirely encircled by hills. Accessible through a slender channel bordered by the protective rock formations of Fort Berkeley peninsula and Fort Charlotte Point, the inner bays are well-sheltered and concealed from view. [1]
